if possible, i am trying to copy files from remote server to local hard disk via terminal ssh.

ssh user@xx.xxx.xx.xx

i find the files i need, and i can "cp" them anyway on the server itself, but how do i cp those files to a LOCAL folder?

very simple task i know, but i cant seem to find anything in the MAN

You must use scp, not cp.

scp syntax is a lot like ssh syntax. Here is one way to do it:

scp local/file account_name@hostname:/path/to/new/location

If you ssh into your account on another machine, remember that copying BACK to your LOCAL machine requires you to use your LOCAL account in the scp command.

Hope that helps.

awesome, thanx for the tip!
had never heard of the "scp" command, so thanx for helping me out!

"scp filename.txt username@ipaddress:~/Desktop/"
worked perfectly.
